The Village Board recently reviewed preliminary plans for a Grand Avenue streetscape plan that includes various beautification elements, such as roadway lighting and median landscaping that will collectively enhance the Village's commercial corridor. This streetscape plan focuses primarily on the area from Sand Lake Road to Lindenhurst Drive, and is being developed to possibly coincide with the Illinois Department of Transportation's plans to improve Grand Avenue.

The purpose of the proposed streetscape plan is to further enhance the Grand Avenue corridor and establish a Village Center with amenities attractive to both residents and visitors. The proposed elements will enhance the aesthetic appearance of the corridor and provide a visual welcome to customers, and future developers and retailers. Proposed streetscape elements include:

-  Pedestrian pathways

-  Pedestrian and roadway lighting poles

-  Light pole banners

-  Median and right-of-way landscaping

-  Shade and ornamental trees

-  Benches

-  Bike racks

-  Trash receptacles

-  Street signs

IDOT's multi-modal transportation improvement program includes plans to widen and improve Grand Avenue from Munn Road to Sand Lake Road starting in approximately 2015/2016. Due to the high number of accidents on this portion of Grand Avenue, IDOT will add a turn lane to improve motorist safety and install a center median with landscaping. Additionally, IDOT will construct a bike path and sidewalks. IDOT will also add pedestrian crosswalks, ADA ramps, pushbutton signals and public safety signage. Other detailed IDOT project plans include the following: Road resurfacing; modernized interconnected traffic signals at Munn Road, Lindenhurst Drive and Sand Lake Road; new, continuous sidewalk; shared-use path for pedestrian and bicycle connectivity; and, an updated storm drainage system. The total project length is two miles.

The Village's proposed streetscape elements will be implemented in accordance with IDOT's construction timeline. For more information, please contact Village Hall at (847) 356-8252.
