Crack Sealing

Sealing and filling asphalt concrete pavement cracks is a common road maintenance activity. Specialized materials are placed into or above cracks to prevent the intrusion of water and incompressible material into the cracks and to reinforce the adjacent pavement. This work is performed annually and is scheduled according to most resent repaired roads first.

Lindenhurst is part of the Northern climate and experiences freeze thaw cycles. When water droplets enter a crack along an asphalt concrete pavement, these droplets will freeze and expand. This expansion will lift sections of the asphalt concrete pavement causing fissures thus allowing for the introduction of more water. This repeated cycle is the cause of potholes in the roadway.

With continuous inspections and proper maintenance, we may extend the life of an asphalt concrete pavement by performing crack sealing and reduce potential potholes.
