The Village of Lindenhurst, incorporated in 1956, has a diverse background filled with residential and commercial growth and development. Finding its roots in a small farming community, Lindenhurst has grown steadily ever since. Resorts built by the Lehmann family in nearby Lake Villa brought visitors from Chicago seeking new surroundings. However, it wasn't until the railroad was built in 1886 that the area saw extensive growth and wealth for the first time. Ernest E. Lehmann, one of the heirs to the family fortune, owned what would be called Lindenhurst Farm, named after the two rows of Linden trees lining the estate.  Years later it was sold to family friend Edna Siebel, who then sold it to developer Morton Engle.  Engle, whose firm had previously developed Venetian Village, subdivided the 500 acre farm in 1952, and in 1953 Lindenhurst Estates was born. Located behind what is now Linden Plaza, these homes provided a modern look that would propel this small community of less than one thousand to a Village of over fifteen thousand today. This close-knit community grew from the help of Engle and the residents’ persuasive spirit of volunteerism.

Since that time, the Village has seen tremendous growth. Located in the heart of Lake County, Lindenhurst’s inviting landscape provides the perfect backdrop for families and businesses. Today, Lindenhurst is home to approximately 100 thriving businesses, including community anchors like the Vista Medical Campus that includes a Freestanding Emergency Center, Surgery Center and medical offices. The Village has excellent access to major highways, including interstate 94 and US Route 45.

The Village’s active community provides plenty of opportunities for involvement and volunteerism, whether through a Village commission, special event or neighborhood activity. Additionally, the partnership between the Village, Park District, Library, Fire District, Township, and School Districts provides an ideal setting for all of our residents.
